The Reed–Sternberg and mononuclear Hodgkin cells are the neoplastic component and may account for only 5% of the total cellularity. The Hodgkin/Reed–Sternberg (HRS) cells secrete cytokines (e.g. interleukins, tumour necrosis factor) which invoke the inflammatory cellular reaction.Cytokine production is also likely to account for the fever and sweats experienced by some patients.
