Small uniform chondrocytes lie in lacunae within a hyaline matrix. (C) In health, the synovial membrane consists of fibrovascular tissue covered by a thin layer of flattened cells, which on ultrastructure can be shown to be a mixture of fibroblasts and histiocytes.
